Season One Episode Guide
Episode Four
3:00am - 4:00am
3:00 A.M. As Kimberly's taken by Dan and Rick, Janet lies on the street, struggling to stay conscious. At the Counter Terrorist Unit, Jack apologises to Nina for accusing her of being the "dirty" agent. He explains the circumstances surrounding Walsh’s death. Jack says that she and Jamey are the only ones he can trust and they must all work together. The Secret Service returns Palmer to the hotel suite. Sherry tells him about the assassination attempt, but Palmer scoffs at its seriousness.
3:10 A.M. Tony discovers that there was an empty seat on the plane that blew up just before 1am. Jamey unlocks part of the encryption on the key card that Walsh gave Jack before he was killed. She finds an address: 18166 San Fernando Road. Before Jamey can do more digging, George Mason (the agent who Jack shot with the tranquilisor gun earlier in the night) arrives and puts the office into a lockdown. Nobody's allowed to leave, all the computers freeze and the phone lines are closed. Jamey hides the key card. Jack manages to avoid the lock down and sneaks out of the office. He goes to investigate the address found on the key card.
3:14 A.M. Tony admits to Nina that he called Mason because he believes Jack's out of control. She accuses him of acting on behalf of his feelings for her. Secret Service Agent Pierce convinces Palmer that the threat against him is indeed serious, and he cautions the candidate about attending the breakfast scheduled for the morning. Palmer's adamant about the breakfast - it’s too important to cancel.
3:17 A.M. In the van, Kimberly appeals to Rick to go back for Janet. She thinks there’s a chance Janet may still be alive. Dan realises that if Janet did survive being hit by the car, she may be able to identify them. He agrees to go back for her, then pulls out a gun. He’s going back to kill her, not save her. To keep her quiet, Rick ties Kimberly up and slaps tape over her mouth.
While Teri and Alan York race toward North Hollywood to rescue Kimberly and Janet, they get pulled over for speeding. Pleading with the policeman to hurry, they reveal how their daughters are in danger. To convince the policeman, they tell him to confirm the 911 call they made just minutes ago. He gets on his radio to confirm it. Eventually Alan runs out of patience. The situation gets slightly out of hand and Alan's arrested for disobeying a lawful order. Teri's left in the car, horrified and helpless. She doesn’t notice Dan’s van passing them on the road.
3:23 A.M. Mason tries to get information on Jack’s whereabouts from Nina. Mason needles Nina by bringing up the affair she had with Jack. Nina stays calm, divulges nothing and never lets Mason get the better of her. Jack locates the San Fernando Road address - it’s a desolate industrial park complex. Once inside, Jack spots a man moving in the shadows. Suddenly, the man sees Jack, fires at him and runs off.
Jack gives chase. Just outside, policewoman Jessie Hampton hears the gunfire and calls for backup. Then she sees the man who shot at Jack run by. She starts to go after him when Bauer appears. Hampton pulls her gun and tells him to freeze. He flashes his badge and tells her he’s after a suspect. Both Hampton and Jack go after the assailant.
3:32 A.M. Rick and Dan debate what to do about Janet as they approach her lifeless body laying in the middle of the street. Kimberly cries through the duct tape on her mouth. Suddenly, an ambulance approaches. Dan steps on the gas, leaving the scene, and Janet, behind.
3:37 A.M. Nina tips off Jamey about Mason’s interrogation, entrusting her not to turn Jack in.
Palmer reveals to his wife, Sherry, that network anchor Maureen Kingsley has uncovered new evidence accusing their son Keith of murdering Lyle Gibson. Gibson raped their daughter, Nicole, several years ago. Not long after the rape, Gibson allegedly committed suicide. Palmer’s associate, Carl, linked the allegations to Keith’s therapist, George Ferragamo. Ferragamo claims Keith made a confession about the murder in therapy sessions. Knowing Kingsley is a responsible journalist, Palmer privately begins to question his son’s innocence.
As Teri and Alan are detained, a call comes in over the police radio confirming the 911 call. They are allowed to leave to find their daughters.
3:42 A.M. The police arrive at the industrial complex in a helicopter. Jack directs Jessie not to shoot the suspect because he needs him alive. But the chopper’s searchlight finds and exposes Jack. The suspect takes advantage and fires at Jack, but misses. The chase continues. Eventually Jack and Hampton split up. Then Hampton makes a mistake and the suspect's able to capture her.
3:48 A.M. The suspect lures Jack out of hiding, warning him to drop his gun or Hampton will be killed. Jack pretends to concede but tricks the suspect into looking away for just a second. A second is all Jack needs to rush the suspect. A melee ensues and there's a gunshot. Jack subdues the suspect but realises Hampton's been shot, as police sirens approach. Teri and Alan see the ambulance that picked up Janet and head to the nearest hospital.
Meanwhile, Dan and Rick meet up with Ira Gaines. They tell him that they killed Janet and hid her body. Gaines takes Kimberly, warning that she'll only survive if she obeys him. Mason attempts to convince Jamey that she’s being used, but she remains silent. He's alerted that a police frequency has spotted Jack. Mason ends the lockout, and pulls his agents out to pick up Jack.
3:59 A.M. Hampton’s body is hauled away in an ambulance. The captured suspect tells Jack that he’ll talk only if Jack helps him not get arrested. As the police drag the suspect off. he yells to Jack, "If you ever want to see your daughter again, get me out of this!" Jack sprints to his car to follow the police and the possible link between the planned assassination on Palmer and Kimberly's disappearance.
