An all-weather aircraft, the F/A-18 is an attack aircraft as well as a fighter. It was designed to carry out both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. A key aspect of the Hornet's popularity with pilots is the ease with which it can be converted from fighter to strike mode and back again. During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 showed off its capability and versatility by shooting down enemy fighters and subsequently bombing enemy targets with the same aircraft on the same mission.
The F/A-18 currently operates in tactical squadrons from air stations and aircraft carriers. It is in service with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, as well as the air forces of Canada, Australia, Spain, Kuwait, Finland, Switzerland, and Malaysia.
