The California Department of Transportation has over 400 cameras monitoring freeway sections across the state. Closed-circuit television cameras are installed on many freeways in urban areas. The pictures are beamed into the Caltrans Traffic Management Centers and are used to verify reported incidents and to dispatch the appropriate response. There are strict guidelines regarding the use and transmission of these pictures. They are strictly for traffic management use only, not for law enforcement or to catch speeders. Some of the video is available on the Caltrans website for commuters to check their the roads for any potential trips.
