Haloperidol (Haldol) is an antipsychotic medication used to treat nervous, mental and emotional conditions. It is used in the treatment of schizophrenia and certain symptoms of Tourette's disorder.
Haloperidol works by blocking a variety of receptors in the brain, mainly dopamine receptors. Dopamine is a natural compound called a neurotransmitter, and is involved in transmitting messages between brain cells. Psychotic illness, and particularly schizophrenia, is considered to be caused by overactivity of dopamine in the brain.
The most common side effects associated with haloperidol are sudden, often jerky, involuntary motions of the head, neck, arms, body, or eyes. There can also be dizziness, hyperactivity, tiredness, and nausea.
