Although it is not a federal law, statutes in almost all of the fifty states require health care providers to report injuries inflicted by the discharge of a firearm. Licensed physicians can be held for criminal offense for failing to report within 24 hours the treatment of such a patient.
There is much debate about releasing such records. Many states also have laws that allow health care professionals to not be held liable when releasing other information, such as the treatment of an intoxicated motorist to the highway patrol and the discovery that a child has been exposed to a controlled substance to the Department of Health.
