Autistic savant or someone with savant syndrome is an individual with autism who has extraordinary skills. They used to be termed “idiot savants.”
These include behaviors such as an obsessive tendency to memorize music and sports trivia, license plate numbers, maps, historical facts, or obscure things such as sounds. Others have special skills in music, art or math.
Approximately one in ten (10%) of persons with autistic disorder have some savant skills. The prevalence in the non-autistic population, including those with mental retardation, is less than 1%. Savant syndrome does occur four to six times more frequently in males than females..
