24 Interviews - Carlos Barboda
Carlos Barbosa had a huge impact on 24. Being the original production designer for the show, he was responsible for creating all the locations found on the pilot of 24, including CTU. The designer talks here in a Second Wave Exclusive!
Second Wave: What brought you to the show? How did you become involved?
Carlos Barbosa: I was one of four Production Designers considered for the pilot of 24 and was given the opportunity to make my pitch. After reading the script I knew this was going to be great and my ideas just poured out. I met with the producers the following week and they offered me the job on the spot after I was through presenting my ideas. I really had them going.
SW: What locations did you design for ‘24’?
CB: All the locations and sets for the pilot including the CTU. |
Barbosa designed the original Situation Room |
SW: What was the best aspect of working on the show?
CB: From a creative point it was having the opportunity to reinterpret what a conventional CIA office looks like (The CTU) and creating a look that gave the show a complete visual identity.
SW: Why did you leave?
CB: Between the end of the pilot and knowing if it would get picked up for series, there is a period of about two months. During this period another project in Spain was offered to me so I left after completing the pilot. However, I was offered the show back the following two seasons but again I had to pass due to other project choices.
SW: What impresses you most about 24?
CB: I love the fact that it runs in real time and how every episode leaves you wanting more.
SW: Do you continue to watch the show? What is your favorite moment from 24?
CB: To be honest, I don't spend much time watching television besides the news and the History Channel. I only watch a little bit every season just to stay current with the new programs. Usually I just watch the pilots and don't watch again.
SW: What was it like working with Kiefer Sutherland and the other incredible cast?
CB: Not any different from working with the cast for other projects. The one star that has impressed me has been Forest Whitaker whom I just finished shooting Hurricane Season in New Orleans. Now, there is someone with amazing talent and also so modest, humble, considerate, and real. That truly is impressive.

SW: What have you been working on recently?
CB: As I mentioned, I just wrapped Hurricane Season, a film directed by Tim Story starring Forest Whitaker. Prior to that was Human Contract, a feature film directed by Jada Pinket Smith. As far as television, the last two project I did were the pilots for Studio 60 and for Marlowe.
SW: What advice would you pass on to others who want to excel in a similar field to you?
CB: Passion, patience, and faith a must. |
SW: One final question: If you met Jack Bauer, what would you say to him?
CB: To stop drinking...
Thank you very much, Mr. Barbosa!
