24 Declassifed: Cat's Claw
| Storyline In the fourth Declassified book, The world's most powerful leaders are gathering in Los Angeles for the G-8 summit, unaware that they have been targeted by two separate terrorist groups, each with its own lethal agenda. Uncovering and disarming one bomb would be difficult enough; eliminating both will be nearly impossible. On the trail of a rabid Islamic assassin, rogue CTU agent Jack Bauer doesn't know that another conspiracy is brewing around him—a poisonous plot to violently dictate the future of the free world. The storyline for this book is another great one; it's original and is very different from anything seen in the series, which is always good. I like the way current events are well interspliced within this novel, namely the G8 conference. The riot gave a new spin to the show, especially involving Jack's daughter, Kim Bauer, in the riot. Also, the bit where Jack was captured and put in that dark room where he heard an "omnious voice" was great! The bad guys were much more interesting in this, because they didn't actually want to keep people. |

Characters There seem to less new, prominent characters in this novel - the most important person is Mercy Benett, a former love of Jack who now works for the police. She gets mixed up the story and eventually gets killed by the Cat's Claw virus engineered by the shows antagonist Bernard Copeland aka Seldom Seen Smith. However, he turns out to be a bit of girl because he does not want to kill people, so he is exhumed from the novel by his subordinate but also crazy killed Frankie Michaelmas. Other new characters include a CTU agent named Ted Ozersky who convinces Mercy he is called Willow whilst undercover and Muhammed Abbas and Ayman Al-Libbi who, for the life of me, I can never tell which is which. They basically run everything that happens and conspire with Frankie to kill millions with the virus. |

24 Relevance This novel is better than most in keeping it's chapter length throughout, however as always the chapters get shorter as the novel goes on. For example the first chapter is 15 ½ pages long, whereas the twenty fourth is just three. The only thing that annoys me about this is that in the last chapter there is only one section (as in it does not update us on the time at any point and stays with Jack throughout). Granted that there is no need to see what anyone else is doing because the threat has been resolved, but that is something that would never happen in the show. |
