24 Declassifed: Vanishing Point Review
Storyline| In this fifth thrilling 24 Declassified novel, Jack must find the out who is leaking all the top–secret military technology, but to do it he must go under cover and wage war against an army of ruthless cartel killers out for revenge and a shadowy Chinese agent. To win he'll have to go undercover in Las Vegas, infiltrate Area 51, turn back an all out assault on their military facility and face his past life as a Delta Force assassin in Central America. The storyline of this book is an incredible one: the situations that the characters are put in are as intense as in the television show, with multiple storylines enforcing the similarities to the show... for a while. About half way through the book David Palmer (who has just been in a building in which a bomb had gone off, causing it to collapse) was no longer seen. His condition after the collapse was never explored; the last we found out about him he was hiding on the floor unsure of what to do. Does this not seem like a waste of a good character and an accompanying storyline? |  |

Characters The plot is intertwined with fantastically written characters. There are the old, that we already know: Jack Bauer, Tony Almeida, David Palmer, Ryan Chappelle, Nina Myers, Morris O'Brian and so on. New characters introduced are pre Mike Novick Head of Staff to Palmer Lev Cohen. To me, the man appears to be written a lot like Novick, or at least, thats how I picture him! He is built up to be a good character, only to be killed at the hands of the book's villian, Jong Lee. This character is another well written one: desciptions of his appearance and plans for the terrorist attack are well put across. Stella Hawk is another new character, Jack's love interest when undercover in Las Vegas. At first appearing to be clueless, it turns out she was in on the attack on Cha Cha Lounge, the building that collapsed. She consipred with her ex-boyfriend Hugo Bix, a bulky man who was in alliance with Jong Lee. |

All the characters are excellently written, giving clear details and interesting small points about their persona: one of the highlights of the book for me is the character descriptions. However, it seems odd that character such as Morris O'Brian and Curtis Manning, who were introduced into the show's later history, are interacting with characters such as Jamey Farell, Richard Walsh and Nina Myers.
24 Relevance Chapters 1-12 are wonderfully written, with many great storylines taking place, as in an episode of 24. However, as a fan of 24, this book feels to be lacking something. The further into the book the reader gets, the shorter the chapters are: some being only three pages, conisisting of 2 "scenes". Can you imagine how this would look on the show? Some hours are made up of just one or two small conversations! |
